and direct staff to prepare a letter of support
The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority is applying for two grants from the
California Office of Historic Preservation for Mentryville restoration and repair. The first,
in the amount of $180,000 is for Interpretive Development of the park, the second for
$320,000 will fund the restoration and repair of historic structures.
Mentryville was a pioneer oil town founded in the 1800's. Modern day explorers will
discover historic buildings, early oil drilling equipment, related historic sites and
spectacular views of the Santa Susana Mountains. It is located in the Santa Clarita Valley
and is an important cultural and historical resource for the community, so important that it
has been listed on both state and national historical registers.
Specific objectives of the project include:
• The inventory and recording of historic resources, including their location, description
and interpretive potential.
• Creation of indoor/outdoor displays where historic equipment and everyday items from
the 1800's will be presented in the context of their use.
• Development of informational panels and signs for the `Oil Pioneer Trail'.
• Design and printing of multiple interpretive materials including brochures, guides and
newsletters.
• Design and installation of information kiosks.
