HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-02-26 - AGENDA REPORTS - MENTRYVILLE GRANT FUNDING (2)Subsequent Need DATE: SUBJECT: DEPARTMENT: CITY OF SANTA CLARITA AGENDA REPORT City Manager Approval Item to be presented by: Laurene Weste February 26, 2002 SUPPORT FOR GRANT FUNDING TO PRESERVE THE MENTRYVILLE HISTORIC PARK City Manager RECOMMENDED ACTION City Council adopt a resolution supporting Authority and the Friends of Mentryville, obtain grant funding to preserve Mentryville of those grants. the Mountains Recreation and Conservation a non-profit organization, in their efforts to and direct staff to prepare a letter of support The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority is applying for two grants from the California Office of Historic Preservation for Mentryville restoration and repair. The first, in the amount of $180,000 is for Interpretive Development of the park, the second for $320,000 will fund the restoration and repair of historic structures. Mentryville was a pioneer oil town founded in the 1800's. Modern day explorers will discover historic buildings, early oil drilling equipment, related historic sites and spectacular views of the Santa Susana Mountains. It is located in the Santa Clarita Valley and is an important cultural and historical resource for the community, so important that it has been listed on both state and national historical registers. Specific objectives of the project include: • The inventory and recording of historic resources, including their location, description and interpretive potential. • Creation of indoor/outdoor displays where historic equipment and everyday items from the 1800's will be presented in the context of their use. • Development of informational panels and signs for the `Oil Pioneer Trail'. • Design and printing of multiple interpretive materials including brochures, guides and newsletters. • Design and installation of information kiosks. w ®x.62 z,7 Agenda Item: /J A • Exterior and interior restoration, repair and furnishing of oil drilling and equipment locations throughout Mentryville, the home of Charles Alexander Mentry, the Felton Schoolhouse and the Mentryville barn. All restoration activities will be carried out in compliance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for preserving and restoring historic buildings. The project will be administered and implemented by park and recreation professionals, who have specialized backgrounds in the restoration and repair of park facilities, including historic structures. The project completion date is estimated at four (4) years from the time of the grant award. Mentryville is and has always been a historic resource for the citizens of the Santa Clarita Valley and as stated in the City's General Plan, a goal of that plan is to identify and preserve locations throughout the Santa Clarita Valley which give it unique and individual qualities different from other municipalities.
