SUBJECT: SMYTH DRIVE — REMOVAL OF EXISTING NO -STOPPING ZONE
DEPARTMENT: Transportation & Engineering Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council adopt a resolution removing the existing no -stopping zone (2,500 feet) along
the north side of Smyth Drive, between Valencia High School and Copper Hill Drive, to
provide additional on -street parking for Valencia High School.
BACKGROUND
Smyth Drive is currently a four -lane roadway with no on -street parking between the
western property line of Valencia High School and Copper Hill Drive. Along the
Valencia High School frontage there is currently 550 feet of on -street parking, a 400 -foot
passenger loading/unloading zone, and a 250 -foot no -stopping zone adjacent to
Dickason Drive.
In order to accommodate the recent and expected growth at Valencia High School, additional
on -street parking is necessary. On March 28, 2002, City staff from the Traffic Engineering
Section met with Mr. Frank Ferry, teacher and Associated Student Body (ASB) Director, and
Mr. Paul Priesz, Principal, regarding on -street parking adjacent to Valencia High School.
At this meeting, all parties agreed that additional on -street parking could be provided along
the north side of Smyth Drive, between Valencia High School and Copper Hill Drive. There
are no existing or planned homes or businesses along the north side of this section of
Smyth Drive. Additional on -street parking would have no adverse impact on businesses or
residents in the area.
ALTERNATIVE ACTION
1. Keep existing situation as is.
2. Other action as determined by the City Council.

FISCAL IMPACT
The work involves the removal of existing signs and roadway striping, amounting to
approximately $1,000.00. Funds are available in the Field Services Striping and Signing
Maintenance account for this work.
