Proposition 47, which will appear on this November's ballot, is a bond measure
designed to construct new and enhance existing public education facilities
throughout the state of California. The measure would provide $4.8 billion in funds
to eligible projects. Facilities from kindergarten through the university level would
be eligible to receive funding.
The six local school districts in the Santa Clarita Valley (Castaic, College of the
Canyons, Newhall, Saugus, Sulphur Springs, and William S. Hart) have worked
with the Santa Clarita Valley School Coalition to secure funding to improve the
condition of local schools. Currently the six districts have combined a total of over
$259 million worth of previously State -approved construction and renovation
projects that are still awaiting appropriations. The bill will automatically provide
these funds.
It is important to note that Senator "Pete" Knight (R — District 17) has come out in
opposition to this measure.
Passage of the bill would benefit local schools by creating 11,500 new seats in grades
K-12, as well as additional facilities at College of the Canyons.
