Item to be presented by: Rick ould
DATE: July 9, 2002
SUBJECT: NAMING OPTIONS FOR TI -TE SANTA CLARITA SPORTS COMPLEX
DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation, and Community Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council receive report and provide direction regarding the naming of the Santa Clarita
Sports Complex (SCSQ.
During the May 2002 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, the Commission received
a suggestion during the public participation portion of the meeting to name the SCSC after
former City Manager George Caravalho. A citizen present at the opening of the Activities
Center knew of Mr. Caravalho's deep commitment to the project, and brought forward the
idea to name SCSC the "George A. Caravalho Santa Clarita Sports Complex." The
Commission agreed to place the concept of naming the SCSC on an agenda with a list of
naming options for the Commission to consider.
At the June 6 meeting of the 2002 Parks and Recreation Commission, several members of
the public spoke in support of naming the SCSC after Mr. Caravalho. The Commission
discussed several options for naming the Sports Complex, and recommended that the City
Council consider adopting the formal name of the "George A. Caravalho Santa Clarita
Sports Complex." The Commission felt that the SCSC would continue to be referred to
commonly as the "Sports Complex," yet the formal name would be a way to honor the City's
first City Manager.
There is precedent for naming City facilities after people who have made significant
contributions to the community. The City has named the Jan Heidt Metrolink Station in
Newhall and the Canyon Country JoAnne Darcy Library after former Councilmembers who
served the community for many years. To date, a recreational area in Santa Clarita has not
been named after an individual, yet the Council has the option of doing so. The Council
may also choose to support naming one part of the Sports Complex, such as the
Gymnasium, Activities Center, Aquatics Center, or even some other portion, in recognition
of Mr. Caravalho.

ALTERNATIVE ACTION
L City Council approve the Parks and Recreation Commission's recommendation that the
SCSC be formally named the "George A. Caravalho Santa Clarita Sports Complex."
2. City Council approve another naming option at the SCSC, such as naming one part of
facility after Mr. Caravalho.
3. City Council take no action on naming the SCSC at this time.
4. Other action as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
If the SCSC were to be named after any individual, the Department would place
appropriate signage at the Center to indicate its formal name. The Department would also
post information about the individual that the facility is named after to educate future
generations. This would involve a nominal expense, and would depend upon the type of
signage deemed appropriate.
