Item to be presented by: Sacy Miller
DATE: February 26, 2002
SUBJECT: SUPPORT FOR THE CALIFORNIA SPACE AUTHORITY
DEPARTMENT: City Manager
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council adopt a resolution supporting local government space policy and direct staff to
forward a letter of support to the California Space Authority (CSA).
BACKGROUND
The City of Santa Clarita was approached by the California Space Authority (CSA) for an
endorsement of their organizational mission of promoting the aerospace industry in the State of
California.
Governed by a statewide board of directors, the California Space Authority (CSA) is a nonprofit
public benefit corporation representing the diverse sectors of the space stakeholder community:
commercial, civil and military. Its members are made up of private companies, citizen interest
groups, chambers of commerce and municipalities who all possess votes in the organization.
CSA serves as the policy advisor to the Secretary of California Technology, Trade and
Commerce Agency on all space -related matters and represents the State of California on space
issues to the international community, federal government, other states, and to local and regional
government entities. CSA supports the retention and expansion of California space activities
through program development, grant administration and policymaker education. Working with
the State of California, CSA maximizes the State's space -related potential by developing,
managing, coordinating funding for, or otherwise supporting California-based space assets.
There are approximately 20 aerospace companies located in the Santa Clarita Valley, employing
over 2500 people. The aerospace industry plays a vital role in the economic viability of the
Santa Clarita Valley and brings in business from around the globe putting Santa Clatita on the
map as a hot spot for aerospace technology and development.
Agenda Item :•3
The endorsement and possible subsequent involvement with the CSA would serve to further the
interests of aerospace companies in the Santa Clarita Valley. The information exchange and
collective support of the aerospace industry that CSA promotes may lead to enhanced legislation
and exciting grant opportunities for firms located in Santa Clarita. CSA has approached other
public entities for support; the most recent to give an endorsement was San Luis Obispo County
who passed a resolution on the January 10, 2002.
