HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-08-27 - RESOLUTIONS - PROP 47 EDUCATION BOND ACT (2)RESOLUTION NO. 02-128 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA, REGARDING PROPOSITION 47 THE KINDERGARTEN -UNIVERSITY PUBLIC EDUCATION FACILITIES BOND ACT OF 2002, A NEW STATE SCHOOL BOND IN THE AMOUNT OF $25.3 BILLION FOR LOCAL SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION AND FACILITY IMPROVEMENT WHEREAS, the provision of quality education to today's youth will ensure a more sustainable community for generations to come; and WHEREAS, the Santa Clarita Valley School Coalition has worked exhaustively to secure funding and improve the condition of local schools and the quality of education; and WHEREAS, all six local school districts — Castaic, College of the Canyons, Newhall, Saugus, Sulphur Springs, and William S. Hart - have worked diligently to secure state matching funds for projects throughout the Santa Clarita Valley; and WHEREAS, the six local school districts have combined a total of over $259 million worth of previously State -approved construction and renovation projects that are still awaiting appropriations; and WHEREAS, additional state funds are required to meet the goals and objectives of the local school districts and the Santa Clarita Valley School Coalition; and WHEREAS, with the passage of this bond, these projects will automatically receive their previously approved matching funds, as $4.8 billion will automatically become available for pre -approved projects throughout the state; and WHEREAS, these funds will assist in constructing new schools and enhancing existing facilities; and WHEREAS,:these funds will provide an additional 11,500 seats for grades K-12 and additional facilities at College of the Canyons; and WHERAS, this bond measure will be put before the voters in the upcoming November, 2002 election; NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council does resolve as follows: SECTION 1. The City Council of the City of Santa Clarita hereby supports the passage of Proposition 47, the school bond measure on the upcoming November 2002 ballot as it will provide local schools with the much needed funding to construct new facilities and enhance existing facilities, helping to ease school overcrowding and enhancing the quality of education in Santa Clarita.
