HomeMy WebLinkAbout2002-08-27 - RESOLUTIONS - PROP 51 TRAFFIC BUS ACT (2)RESOLUTION NO. 02-129 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING PROPOSITION 51, THE TRAFFIC CONGESTION RELIEF AND SAFE SCHOOL BUS ACT WHEREAS, traffic congestion threatens the well being, safety, and quality of life for the residents of the City of Santa Clarita; and WHEREAS, air and water quality are degraded by the heavy use of vehicles; and WHEREAS, the City of Santa Clarita would greatly benefit from State investment in projects that reduce traffic congestion, provide additional public transportation, improve water and air quality, and create better transportation for senior citizens; and WHEREAS, a ballot initiative that includes funds to help reduce traffic congestion and improve school bus safety has been proposed; and WHEREAS, the passage of this initiative would not otherwise reduce funds that the City of Santa Clarita can obtain from State sources; and WHEREAS, this funding measure is designed not to raise taxes, to reallocate a very small part of the State General Fund to solve transportation problems; and WHEREAS, this measure will only operate during times of rapid growth and development; and WHEREAS, this measure is currently scheduled to appear on the November 2002 ballot; NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City of Santa Clarita as follows: SECTION 1: The City of Santa Clarita supports the intent of Proposition 51 and encourages City residents to support the ballot initiative at the polls in November 2002. SECTION 2: The City Council hereby directs the City Clerk to transmit copies of this resolution to Governor Gray Davis, State Senator William J. "Pete" Knight, State Senator Tom McClintock, Assembly Member George Runner, Assembly Member Keith Richman, the League of California Cities, and the Planning and Conservation League. SECTION 3: The Mayor, or presiding officer, is hereby authorized to affix his/her signature to this Resolution, signifying its adoption by the City Council of the City of Santa Clarita, and the City Clerk, or his/her duly appointed Deputy, is directed to attest hereto.
