BACKGROUND / ANALYSIS:
In December 1999 the City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clarita Community College District entered into a
groundbreaking partnership to provide the community with an expanded opportunity for a new cultural arts venue. The
College District had secured state funding augmented by local funds to build a performing arts center on its College of the
Canyons campus. The College and City mutually recognized that if the Center's capacity could be expanded beyond
what the State would fund, a greater value could be provided to the citizens of Santa Clarita through community use of the
facility and the increased ability of the Center to accommodate professional performances and events.
This agreement provided $2.4 million in funding from the City of Santa Clarita as part of the $18 million cost of
constructing the Performing Arts Center. A memorandum of understanding was drafted by administrative staff of the
College and the City and approved the Santa Clarita City Council and the Board of Trustees of the College. The staff of
both agencies has periodically reviewed this agreement as the building of the Center has progressed.
The item is intended as in informative review of progress to date on the construction of the center, plans for
implementation of programming and use of the center, and next steps for moving forward. It is both a discussion and
information item.
