BACKGROUND / ANALYSIS:
As was forecast at the joint meeting in February 2001 between the Board of Trustees and the City Council, College of the
Canyons is in the process of designing, fund raising and planning for a full-service university center on its current campus.
This project will create an educational entity that does not yet exist in California. The proposed University Center is a
community college facility, which will house university level upper -division and graduate level programs from a number of
four-year colleges and universities. The purpose of this unique venture will be to provide the people of the Santa Clarita
Valley an option to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees "at home."
In moving forward the concept of the University Center, the College built an Interim University Center, which opened in
Fall 2001. This interim facility was built in response to the early interest of a number of universities that saw the potential
value of the university center concept and were impatient to implement the idea. The Interim University Center is located
at the southeast corner of the current buildings on the College campus. This building represents a major benchmark in
the development of the permanent University Center at College of the Canyons. The Interim Center has 9 classrooms, a
computer/language lab, private offices, a faculty work suite, and a small student lounge.
The permanent University Center is planned as a two story, 50,000 square foot facility housing classrooms, laboratories, a
virtual library, food service court, offices, meeting rooms, a student service area and a teleconference center. The College
is also exploring the opportunity to add an additional 60,000 -square -foot wing that can house a number of educationally
related activities as well as serving some of the College's own facility needs.
This item is intended to provide an update on the planning for the physical facility, a summary of capital campaign efforts
and potential funding sources, highlights of current program offerings, and details of student outcomes.
