HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003-04-22 - AGENDA REPORTS - RECYCLING LITTER REDUCTION (2)Agenda Item• CITY OF SANTA CI ARITA AGENDA REPORT CONSENT CALENDAR City Manager Approval: Item to be presented by: Jason Smisko DATE: April 22, 2003 SUBJECT: RESOLUTION FOR THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION BEVERAGE CONTAINER RECYCLING AND LITTER REDUCTION GRANT DEPARTMENT: Field Services RECOMMENDED ACTION City Council adopt a Resolution for the California Department of Conservation Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Grant for the 2003/2004 fiscal year requesting the amount of $44,623 for use in encouraging City residents to recycle beverage containers. BACKGROUND The Department of Conservation, Division of Recycling (DOC) provides annual grants to cities and counties for promoting beverage container recycling and/or litter clean-up activities. The grant amounts are determined on a per capita basis. This year, the City is eligible for $44,623 for use in said activities. A resolution of support by the Council is required as part of the City's grant application. The City has been receiving an average of $44,000 from DOC block grants since the 2000/2001 fiscal year. Historically, the City has utilized the grant funds for enhancing its education and outreach efforts, for funding the creation of the Environmental Services Division mascot C.O.R.E.Y. Conservation, for the purchase of recycling containers for use in public areas (such as the recycling containers located in the back of the Council Chambers), and for initiating the bus stop trash and recycling collection program anticipated to begin this summer. If the City is successful in obtaining funding in the 2003/2004 fiscal year, grant funds will be utilized to further support the City's bus stop trash and recycling collection program, for the preparation and purchase of additional outreach materials, and other related beverage opted:Be-so,-sem container recycling activities. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS Other action as determined by the Council FISCAL IMPACT The grant application requests an amount of $44,623, and does not require matching funds. Administration of the grant will not exceed the base budget funds. Funds will be appropriated if grant is awarded in the future. ATTACHMENTS Resolution - DOC Grant Resolution
