SUBJECT: AMENDMENT TO THE AGREEMENT FOR CITY ATTORNEY
SERVICES

RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council authorize the City Manager or designee to execute an Amended Agreement for City
Attorney Services between the City of Santa Clarita and Burke, Williams & Sorensen, LLP.
BACKGROUND
The last agreement for the provision of City Attorney services between the City of Santa Clarita
and the law firm Burke, Williams & Sorenson, LLP was effective July 1, 1997. Over the last
seven years, there has been no increase in the cost of providing Attorney services to the City.
The City recently received notice that the cost of providing City Attorney services has increased
dramatically and received a request to amend the current agreement. More specifically, the
request is for an adjustment in billing rates to be effective January 1, 2005, and an annual
assessment thereafter consistent with the Consumer Price Index as approved by the City
Manager, together with a modification of the designated personnel performing services on behalf
of the City.

It is also proposed that the retainer rates be adjusted from $135 to $165 per hour.

FISCAL IMPACT
The fiscal impact to the City would result in a 23% increase in Attorney services costs to the
City.
