BACKGROUND Staff has received requests from residents along Benz Road to investigate the possibility of restricting truck access to this residential roadway. Prior to the extension of Copper Hill Drive to David Way, Benz Road terminated just south of the Copper Hill Drive alignment and carried relatively low traffic volumes and little truck traffic. As part of the Copper Hill Drive extension project, Benz Road was connected to Copper Hill Drive, providing a direct connection between Bouquet Canyon Road and Copper Hill Drive. Due to this new connection, additional motorists, including truck drivers, are now utilizing Benz Road to travel between Copper Hill Drive and Bouquet Canyon Road. As a residential roadway, Benz Road was designed to accommodate local truck traffic destined to and/or from local residences. Benz Road, however, was not built to accommodate the higher volumes of truck traffic that typically occur on arterial level roadways. Staff has conducted a traffic investigation along Benz Road and has concluded that restricting truck access along Benz Road would redirect truck traffic back onto the arterial roadway system, which has been designed to better accommodate these types of vehicles. Consistent with these . ,tCcmk' %ac; findings, staff recommends that Benz Road, between Copper Hill Drive and Bouquet Canyon Road, be included in the list of roadways in Section 12.48.060 of the Santa Clarita Municipal Code restricting the use of vehicles exceeding 14,000 pounds. This recommendation has been discussed with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department, and they are in agreement with City staff. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS Other action as determined by the City Council.
