CANYON COUNTRY SHERIFF'S OFFICE/ALTERNATE
COMMAND POST
Parks, Recreation & Community Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council approve the Lease Agreements and authorize the City Manager, or his designee, to
execute the documents, subject to City Attorney approval.
BACKGROUND
In 1997, the City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clarita Sheriffs Station partnered to develop the
Community Interaction Team (CIT). The team was based in Newhall for the first year, and
Part 1 crimes decreased and community participation increased in working together to improve
quality of life issues. In 1998, grant funds facilitated the CIT restructuring to consist of one
Sergeant and four Deputies. The team focus moved to the Canyon Country area where it has
conducted community clean-ups, improved quality of life issues, and impacted crime.
Grant funds have continued to support the CIT. Since 1999, the CIT and the City of Santa
Clarita have been utilizing a storefront in Canyon Country to maintain its presence in the area
until the lease expired on March 29, 2004. To fill this void, staff has worked with the William S.
Hart Union High School District to secure a three-year lease, free of charge, for an office in the
old Canyon Country Library.
Approval of the following Lease Agreements will result in the opening of a Sheriffs Office and
Alternate Command Post at 18536 Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country:
• Agreement between City of Santa Clarita and William S. Hart Union High School District.
• Agreement between City of Santa Clarita and the County of Los Angeles.
