SUBJECT: DOWNTOVvrN NEWHALL SPECIFIC PLAN – STATUS REPORT
RECOMMENDED ACTIO
City Council and Planning Commission receive report regarding Downtown Newhall Specific
Plan.
BACKGROUND
On June 8, 2004, the City of Santa Clarita Council directed staff to negotiate a contract with
Moule and Polyzoides to prepare a Specific Plan for Downtown Newhall. The goal of this
specific Plan is to provide property and business owners with the tools to entice private
investment into the area and to create a series of thriving economic engines in Downtown
Newhall.
Work on the project began in July and to date the project team has toured the Downtown
Newhall project area, visited other downtowns in Southern California, began compiling traffic
and parking data, and conducted a community outreach meeting.
At tonight's joint study session, staff will: further update the Council as to actions that have been
completed, summarize recent public involvement and participation, and provide a timeline for
the next steps to be accomplished—which includes a charrette during the week of September 13,
2004 followed by commencement of the preparation of the draft Specific Plan and strectscape
design amenities.
