BACKGROUND Mitch and Kyle McMullen were born and raised in Santa Clarita. In 1995 they founded Newhall Coffee, the area's first micro -roasted coffee. Today, the Newhall Coffee Company is available in over 1,000 supermarkets in California and was recently chosen to be the coffee sold in Mammoth Mountain resorts. It is also the best selling coffee in Santa Clarita stores that carry it. Mitch and Kyle McMullen are a Santa Clarita success story and a great "shop local" story. They are also very proud of their hometown. In an effort to create a win-win situation for the City and for Newhall Coffee, a proposal is being brought forth that would mutually benefit both parties. In exchange for the City naming Newhall Coffee as the "Of cial Coffee of the City of Santa Clarita " the Newhall Coffee Company would include on their coffee packaging;—"Roasted in Santa Clarita. California.' The agreement involves no monetary compensation for either side by either side. Both the City and Newhall Coffee are open to providing product at various city events but will discuss this and the details, on a case-by-case basis. In addition, the City will host a press conference at the Newhall Coffee Store, Java and Jazz with members of the City Council for the official naming. At that time, City representatives will hang a sign in the storefront, announcing a Ea that Newhall Coffee is the Official Coffee of the City of Santa Clarita, is poured here. The City will be embarking upon a "Shop Santa Clarita" outreach campaign from July to December 2004. Part of that campaign involves promoting local businesses, and creating both education and awareness of the unique and long-time businesses in the City. By creating partnerships with local businesses, such as the "official coffee naming," the City can better promote city -based businesses. Additionally, by placing "Santa Clarita" on all Newhall Coffee packaging, we are helping to uniquely brand our City. The City has a similar but more complicated agreement with the Pepsi Corporation. This agreement involves purchasing product, a monetary exchange, and use of product at city events. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS None FISCAL IMPACT None ATTACHMENTS None
