SUBJECT: RECOGNITION OF A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE OF THE LIFE OF
PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN
DEPARTMENT: City Manager
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council adopt a resolution providing for the recognition of June 11, 2004 as a Day of
Remembrance of the Life of Ronald Reagan as a City Holiday.
President Ronald Reagan died on June 5, 2004. On June 6, 2004, President George W. Bush
declared a National Day of Mourning for June 11, 2004. On June 7, 2004 Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger declared a State observed Day of Remembrance for June 11, 2004. We have
been informed that numerous cities across the State will be closing operations on Friday, June
11, 2004 in honor of the memory of President Reagan. The City Council must take action at the
City Council meeting of June 8, 2004 if the City is to observe a commemoration of this type.
This agenda item is brought forward as a subsequent need item, as the need for the City Council
to take action arose after the posting of the agenda on June 3, 2004. If this Resolution is adopted,
City Hall will be closed on Friday, June 11, 2004 as a City Holiday in memory of President
Reagan. City staff will be able to observe this day in an appropriate manner of their choosing.
Regularly scheduled employees will receive holiday pay, while those employees who are
scheduled to be off on that day will receive a floating holiday to be taken at a later date.
Emergency services will be available in the same manner as other holidays.
