MOUNTAINS CONSERVANCY BOND APPROPRIATIONS AS
INCLUDED IN THE STATE BUDGET
City Manager
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council support the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy appropriations as included in the
California State budget by the State Legislature.
BACKGROUND
The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy was established by the California State Legislature in
1980. Since that time, it has helped to preserve over 55,000 acres of parkland in both wilderness
and urban settings, and has improved more than 114 public recreational facilities throughout
Southern California.
Through direct action, alliances, partnership, and joint powers authorities, the Conservancy's
mission is to strategically buy back, preserve, protect, restore, and enhance treasured pieces of
Southern California to form an inter linking system of urban, rural and river parks, open space,
trails, and wildlife habitat that are easily accessible to the general public.
The City of Santa Clarita and the Conservancy have partnered in important park and open space
projects, which have been of great benefit to the citizens of Santa Clarita and Southern California
including the Santa Clarita Woodlands, Towsley Canyon Park, Mentryville, Whitney Canyon, the
Rim of the Valley Trail Corridor, Santa Clara River sites, support for Placerita Canyon Park and
Nature Center, and protection of critical wildlife habitat linkages.
The State Legislature has appropriated funds for the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy.
Adopted:- o . oy F<
The appropriations are from park and water bonds (Proposition 12, 40, and 50) that are
specifically designated to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy. Without the bond funding,
critical park acquisition may be lost.
