HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004-03-09 - AGENDA REPORTS - WEYERHAEUSER PARDEE DONATION (2)Agenda Item: ;L CITY OF SANTA CLARITA AGENDA REPORT CONSENT CALENDAR City Manager Approval: Item to be presented by: Adele Macpherson DATE: March 9, 2004 SUBJECT: CITY TO RECEIVE DONATION FROM WEYERHAEUSER COMPANY FOUNDATION AND PARDEE HOMES FOR EMERGENCY RESPONSE EQUIPMENT DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation & Community Services RECOMMENDED ACTION City Council accept the combined donation of $20,000 to be appropriated to account number 7431-7312 and increase estimated revenues in account number 001-6714. BACKGROUND The Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation, also the parent company of Pardee Homes, has committed to donate funds to the City of Santa Clarita and neighboring communities affected by the recent Southern California fires to purchase emergency equipment and materials needed to prevent and/or assist in any future emergencies or natural disasters. The Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to the City of Santa Clarita, Emergency Management. The grant was the recommendation of the local Weyerhaeuser Foundation Committee. Pardee Homes matched the grant with an additional $10,000, for a total of $20,000. Weyerhaeuser and Pardee selected 'communication enhancement" as their preferred use of the grant funds as the area that could impact the most number of people and effective communication is a challenge during a disaster. Therefore, an electronic display board mounted on a trailer would be purchased and used to notify commuters of road closures and alternate routes. Additionally, satellite phones will be purchased for the Emergency Operations Center which will ensure an additional level of operability, as cell phone use can be challenged during high use times. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS 1. Decline donated funds. 2. Other action as determined by City Council. FISCAL IMPACT Twenty thousand dollars ($20,000) to be appropriated to account number 7433-7312 and increase estimated revenues in account number 001-6714.
