ITEM CABLE FRANCHISE RENEWAL PROCESS - UPDATE —Ken Pulskamp, City Manager provided an overview of the topic and turned the presentation over to Kevin Tonoian, Senior Management Analyst, who reviewed the cable franchise renewal process, the cable franchise renewal priorities and recommended next steps. Council questions, concerns and comments included: concern regarding public relations; better utilizing the community access channel; issues with not being able to prevent negative programming; capabilities for original broadcasting; exploring what other communities have done; getting as much information out to the public as possible; televising government meetings; providing CNN on the basic or mid-level cable package; supporting a better level of customer service; the local newspapers having cable access to provide better inter -connection in case of a disaster. No public comments were made at this time. ITEM 2 BRANDING STRATEGY — Ken Pulskamp, City Manager, introduced the concept of branding for the City and Mike Haviland, Economic Development Manager, gave the presentation on 2 designs as a result of comments at the previous study session on this topic. The 2 designs consist of the words "City of Santa Clarita" with a tree and hill or with the City "seal'. Council questions, concerns and comments included: the concept of trying to sell the City, visitors having fun in the community and needing to have a fun way of conveying what a great place we have; what the return will be on this matter; when do we stop spinning our wheels; putting the issue out to the community if there is a concern with too much staff time; the font being boring; not wanting to reinvent the wheel; making the letters more fluid; the concept being important to businesses; supporting different logos for different events/purposes; preserving the seal for the community; preferring design 2 with the words and City "seal'. Public Participation: Gary Lean, Marketing Director for Ice Station Valencia, commented that the fonts are fine and the designs portray a professional image from a business standpoint; if trying to market to others perhaps developing spinoffs like the tourism logo might be beneficial. City Manager Pulskamp thanked the Council for their input and advised that no more study sessions would be needed. Staff would place an item on a regular Council agenda for action with alternatives. Mayor Kellar adjourned the meeting at 6:45 p.m. JLWI- C2 Sharon L. Dawson, City Clerk
