HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-09-27 - AGENDA REPORTS - COUNCIL COMP (2)Agenda Item: CITY OF SANTA CLARITA AGENDA REPORT CONSENT CALENDAR City Manager Approval: Item to be presented by: Ken Striplin DATE: September 27, 2005 SUBJECT: COUNCILMEMBER COMPENSATION DEPARTMENT: City Manager's Office RECOMMENDED ACTION .L - City Council adopt an ordinance entitled "AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING SECTION 2.04.048 OF THE SANTA CLARITA MUNICIPAL CODE REGARDING CITY COUNCIL SALARIES." Council introduced and held the first reading of the ordinance on September 13, 2005. Members of the Santa Clarita City Council are compensated monthly by the City for the substantial amount of time and effort they contribute leading our local government. Each Councilmember makes personal and financial sacrifices in order to fulfill the responsibilities associated with their jobs. The last City Council compensation adjustment took place on July 1, 2004. Government Code Section 36516(c) sets forth basic provisions which allow regular adjustments to the City Council compensation. Government Code Section 36515.5 requires that City Council compensation adjustments be adopted by the present City Council, to be effective for future City Councils. This proposed adjustment presents a reasonable manner in which to assure the fair and equitable compensation of Councilmembers of future City Councils. Section 35616(c) provides for Councilmember compensation to be increased by 5% for each calendar year from the operative date of the last adjustment to salary. The last salary adjustment was on July 1, 2004. The recommended increase represents a 5% increase for the period July 1, 2004 through June 30, 2005 and an additional 5% increase for the period July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006, to be effective July 1, 2006. Adopted: 0 rd, S -I (P The proposed adjustment, as set forth by the Government Code Section 36516(c), is as follows: Current Compensation $1,293.02 ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS Other action as determined by the City Council. FISCAL IMPACT Proposed Compensation $1,425.55 The proposed increase of $132.53 per month per Councilmember represents an approximate annual increase of $7,212.60 in salary and salary based benefits and taxes.
