SUBJECT: EDWARD BYRNE MEMORIAL JUSTICE ASSISTANCE GRANT
DEPARTMENT: Parks, Recreation & Community Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
1. City Council accept Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) from the U.S.
Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance.
2. Increase estimated revenues in Account Number 108-5271 by $35,348.
3. Increase estimated expenditures in Account Number 74955-8001 (Contractual Services) by
$32,423, and Account Number 74955-7312 by $2,925.
4. Authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute any contract documents, change orders, or
amendments arising out of this program, subject to City Attorney approval.
BACKGROUND
The City of Santa Clarita has been awarded a grant for $35,348 from the U.S. Department of
Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance
Grant (JAG). This program allows states and local governments to support a broad range of
activities to prevent and control crime and to improve the criminal justice system. The funding
distribution is based on population and crime statistics, as well as law enforcement expenditure
data.
Grant funding will be used for overtime for truancy sweeps and bike patrols, and other law
enforcement efforts, including stake -outs of potential crime locations, undercover operations, and
other surveillance activities. It will also be used to purchase a video camera and wireless audio
system that will help in surveillance and sting efforts.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
Decline the Edward Byme Memorial Justice Grant.
Other direction as determined by City Council.
FISCAL RvIPACT
The total cost of this program is $35,348 to be offset completely by grant funds.
