CITY OF SANTA CLARITA
AGENDA REPORT
NEW BUSINESS City Manager Approval:
Item to be presented by: Councilmember
DATE: February 22, 2005
SUBJECT: CONSIDERATION OF METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT'S
DECISION TO REMOVE PEPPER TREES
DEPARTMENT: City Manager's Office
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council direct staff and City Attorney to explore all possible options and legal alternatives
to prevent removal of the trees.
BACKGROUND
At the January 25, 2005 City Council Meeting, Placerita Canyon resident Ann Irvine expressed
concern about Metropolitan Water District's (MWD) plan to remove pepper trees, which
currently provide a buffer for Placerita Canyon homes.
City Council directed staff to investigate and to contact the MWD for discussion. City staff has
since been in contact with the MWD to request that the trees not be removed and establish an
agreement that would allow the trees to remain.
It has been requested that City staff and the City Attorney explore all possible options and legal
alternatives to prevent removal of the trees. The MWD has determined that the removal of
80-100 pepper trees currently located in Placerita Canyon is necessary to prevent possible water
pipeline damage.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
As determined by City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
None by this action.
