MULTI -WAY STOP INSTALLATION - WALNUT STREET AND
14TH STREET
Building and Engineering
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council adopt a resolution authorizing the installation of a multi -way stop control at the
intersection of Walnut Street and 14th Street.
BACKGROUND
Staff received requests from area residents to investigate the possibility of installing a multi -way
stop control at the intersection of Walnut Street and 14th Street. This intersection is in a
residential area, and is controlled with a two-way stop on 14th Street.
Staff conducted a multi -way stop analysis at this intersection, which included the evaluation of
vehicular volume data, pedestrian count data, collision history, and sight visibility. The analysis
determined that this intersection meets the City's minimum volume warrants for the installation
of a multi -way stop control on residential streets.
In addition, the intersection of Walnut Street and 14th Street is along the "Suggested Route to
School" route for students attending Newhall Elementary School and Placerita Junior High
School. A multi -way stop control will help establish right-of-way assignments, provide for the
orderly movement of traffic, and enhance the safety of pedestrians and motorists entering or
crossing this intersection.
For these reasons, staff recommends the installation of stop signs for northbound and southbound
Walnut Street, making this a multi -way stop control intersection.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
Other action as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funds for this work in the amount of $500.00 are available in the Field Services Striping and
