RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council accept the work performed by S.J. Amoroso Construction Company, Inc. for the
Newhall Community Center and Jan Heidt Metrolink Parking Lot Expansion, Project Nos. F2002
and F2006; direct the City Clerk to file the notice of completion; and direct staff to release the
retention balance 35 days after the notice of completion is recorded, provided no stop notices, as
provided by law, have been filed.
BACKGROUND
On June 22, 2004, the City Council awarded a construction contract to S.J. Amoroso
Construction Company, Inc. to construct a new community center located at 22421 Market Street
in the Newhall area of the City. In addition to the construction of the community center, this
contract included an expansion of the existing Jan Heidt Metrolink parking lot, adding 150
parking spaces.
The construction of the community center was substantially completed by January 20, 2006, and
the grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony was held on January 21, 2006. The size of the new
community center is three times the previously leased facility. The new community center
consists of a classroom, teen room, dance room, sheriff substation, multipurpose room, boxing
room, meeting rooms, and staff offices needed to facilitate the various functions of the center.
The construction of the new community center has brought significant improvements to the local
residents, and it provides many enhanced amenities to the Newhall community.
The northeast portion of the parking lot adjacent to the Jan Heidt Metrolink Station was
expanded by 150 spaces. A portion of the construction expenses for the parking lot expansion
was funded by MTA through Proposition C.
The construction contract was completed on time to the satisfaction of the City Engineer on
June 12, 2006.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
