OVERHEAD STREET NAME SIGN, PROJECT NO. C0029 -
AWARD CONTRACT
Public Works
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council approve the purchase of 152 reflective overhead mast arm street name signs to
Safeway Sign Company in the amount of $115,004.80; and authorize the City Manager or
designee to execute all documents, subject to City Attorney approval.
BACKGROUND
As part of an overall effort to capitalize on the positive image of the City of Santa Clarita, the.
City Council requested that staff design new street name signs for City intersections. This request
was made to improve the quality and reflectivity of the City's street signage, and to serve as
delineation between the City and the County, allowing motorists to be aware of when they were
entering or exiting the City.
Staff from several departments worked together to design a street name sign that met the required
standards for street signage, was aesthetically pleasing, and served as a means to identify the
street name and the City of Santa Clarita. After several designs were evaluated, the final design
for the new street name signs was agreed to earlier this year. In May, a prototype sign of that
design naming Valencia Boulevard was installed at the intersection of Valencia Boulevard and
McBean Parkway. That prototype remains at the intersection.
The prototype sign was manufactured using the highest quality diamond grade reflective sheeting
material available. Diamond grade sheeting performs better from all angles than the existing
street name signs, which were manufactured using previously approved reflective sheeting. The
new material is substantially brighter than the internally illuminated street name signs which
exist at most intersections. This results in greater visibility of the signage to motorists.
During the Fiscal Year 2006-07 budget process, the City Council allocated funds for this effort to
upgrade street signage, allowing for the purchase and installation of the new street name signs at
gateway intersections in the City. The signs will include the City icon, creating identity for the
City that is consistent with the City's Beautification Plan. An example of the signs is attached.
152 signs will be purchased, which will provide signage at 42 of the City's intersections.
The invitation to bid for the Overhead Street Name Signs was published on November 10,
November 15, and November 17, 2006. On November 27, 2006, the following bids were
opened by the Purchasing Division:
Vendor Bid Location
Safeway Sign Company $115,004.80 Adelanto, CA
Zumar Industries $160,204.54 Santa Fe Springs, CA
Custom Products Corporation $282,000.00 Jacksonville, MS
Of the three bid packages submitted, only Safeway Sign Company submitted a complete bid
package with the required signed addendums. Stats is recommending that the City Council enter
into a contract with Safeway Sign Company to provide the overhead street name signs.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
Other action as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funds for this project were allocated to Account No. C0029001 in the 2006/2007 budget.
