HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-05-09 - AGENDA REPORTS - REWARD HOMICIDE ARREST (2)CONSENT CALENDAR DATE: SUBJECT: DEPARTMENT: Agenda Item: CITY OF SANTA CLARITA AGENDA REPORT City Manager Approval: Item to be presented by: May 9, 2006 am REWARD FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO THE ARREST AND CONVICTION OF THE PERSON OR PERSONS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HOMICIDE OF THE NEWBORN BABY GIRL FOUND AT THE POLYNESIAN MOBILE HOME PARK City Manager's Office RECOMMENDED ACTION City Council adopt a resolution authorizing the City Manager to offer a reward in the amount of $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the homicide of the newborn baby girl found at the Polynesian Mobile Home park. Appropriate $10,000 from Council Contingency Account 2250-7401 to Account 1210-8110 for this reward. BACKGROUND In November 1996, the City Council formally adopted a reward policy. Since that time the City has on occasion offered rewards in order to assist the Sheriffs Department with solving of a crime. On Tuesday, May 2, 2006, the body of a newborn baby girl was found dead in a dumpster at the Polynesian Mobile Home Park. The baby believed to be white or Hispanic, was reportedly discovered around 7:45 p.m. by a woman who was looking through the trash for recyclables when she found the tiny body, which was covered with a plastic bag and placed inside a trash container. The woman who found the the body described it as a newborn whose umbilical cord was still attached. An autopsy has since been performed and the death has now been ruled a homicide. Investigators are attempting to determine if the baby was left by a resident of the park or by an Adopted: f>eSo__ outsider. To date, no leads have been received and the Sheriffs Department is asking the community for assistance in this case in hopes of identifying the suspect(s). ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS Other action as determined by the City Council. FISCAL IMPACT Ten thousand dollars is available in the Council Contingency Account 2250-7401. ATTACHMENTS Resolution
