NAMING THE NEW PARK ON WHITES CANYON ROAD AS
TODD LONGSHORE PARK
Parks, Recreation, and Community Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council approve the recommendation from the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services
Commission to name the new City park on Whites Canyon Road as "Todd Longshore Park."
BACKGROUND
On April 25, 2006, the community of Santa Clarita endured the sudden passing of Commissioner
Todd Longshore, who served on the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commission for
16 years. Todd had a passion and commitment for parks and recreation and made significant
contributions in that area to the community of Santa Clarita.
At the May 4, 2006, Commission meeting the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services
Commission asked staff to establish an ad-hoc committee to review, discuss, and recommend
ideas for remembrance of the late Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commissioner
Todd Longshore.
The ad-hoc committee proposed the following four recommendations:
1) Create the "Todd Longshore Volunteer Coach of the Year Award."
2) Placement of an inscription on a framed picture of Todd Longshore to be hung in the
Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department Office.
3) Renaming the existing SCORE Scholarship Program the "Todd Longshore SCORE
Scholarship Fund."
4) Naming the new City park on Whites Canyon Road as "Todd Longshore Park."
APPROVED
At the July 6, 2006, Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commission meeting the
Commission unanimously approved implementing Items 1 through 3 which encompassed
creating the "Todd Longshore Volunteer Coach of the Year Award," Placement of an inscription
on a framed picture of Todd Longshore to be hung in the Parks, Recreation, and Community
Services Department Office; Renaming the existing SCORE Scholarship Program the "Todd
Longshore SCORE Scholarship Fund," as well as forwarding a recommendation to the City
Council on Item 4 to approve the naming of the new City Park on Whites Canyon Road as "Todd
Longshore Park."
Currently, there is a standard for naming City facilities after people who have made significant
public service contributions to the community. To date, the City has named one recreation area,
the George A. Caravalho Santa Clarita Sports Complex, which was named after a former City
Manager. Two facilities, the Jan Heidt Metrolink Station in Newhall and the Canyon Country
JoAnne Darcy Library, are both named after former City Councilmembers who served the
community for many years and have made considerable public service contributions to the City.
In addition, a portion of the Commuter Rail Trail, between the Santa Clarita Metrolink Station
and Rainbow Glen Drive, has been commemorated to Chuck Pontius, a former City employee
who unfortunately passed away in a traffic collision while riding his bike in Santa Clarita.
The Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commission believes that by naming this park
"Todd Longshore Park," it will commemorate the City's appreciation of the late Commissioner
and recognize Todd Longshore's commitment and dedication to the community of Santa Clarita.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
Other action as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
No fiscal impact. Funding for the facility signage is included in the project budget.
