City Council accept Office of Traffic Safety's DUI Enforcement and Comprehensive Traffic Safety Grant in the amount of $393,936. 2. Increase estimated revenues in OTS Grant Account Number 453- 5173 by $231,280 in Fiscal Year 2006-07. 3. Increase estimated expenditures in Account Number 7484 per Attachment A. 4. Authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute any contract documents, change orders, or amendments arising out of this program, subject to City Attorney's approval. BACKGROUND The City of Santa Clarita and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriffs Station have been awarded, through a competitive process, a two-year grant from the State of California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) in the amount of $393,936 with $231,280 being the first year allocation. This funding is a reimbursable grant and provides local agencies with opportunities to address traffic safety and implement innovative alcohol countermeasure strategies. Through this program, the City and the Sheriffs Station will address the issue DUI and speed -related fatal and injury collisions, with focus on enforcement and education. The main goal of the program is to build upon the extremely successful 2004 OTS grant award by continuing to reduce DUI collisions and arrests, and working closely with community organizations to promote traffic safety programs and increase public awareness. The grant will mainly fund overtime enforcement operations (including 24 DUI checkpoints and 24 saturation patrols). In addition, it will also fund a Total Station for the Sheriffs (that will be used in accident reconstruction and mapping fatal collision scenes), seven pole -mounted radar speed display signs, travel and training, and marketing and outreach materials. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS 1. Decline OTS DUI Enforcement and Comprehensive Traffic Safety grant. 2. Other direction as determined by City Council. FISCAL IMPACT The total cost of this program is $393,936 for two years, to be offset completely by grant funds.
