City Council Study Session
Tuesday, May 2, 2006
Presentation: Ken Pulskamp, City Manager, began the presentation at 5:32 p.m.
Call to Order: A quorum was established at 5:40 p.m.
Roll Call: All Councilmembers were present with the exception of members Smyth
and Kellar.
Flag Salute: City Manager Ken Pulskamp led the flag salute.
ITEM 1 LABOR MARKET STUDY AND IMPLEMENTATION PLAN
OVERVIEW — Ken Pulskamp, City Manager, introduced the item and
Carrie Rogers, Economic Development Manager. Ms. Rogers gave a
synopsis of the item and turned the presentation over to Alonzo Pedrin of
Alfred Gobar Associates, a real estate research firm, that conducted a
labor market Study of the City's workforce in June 2005. The purpose of
the study was to analyze the City's resident labor market and its potential,
identify characteristics of the workforce that commute to jobs within and
outside Santa Clarita, highlight workforce skills and experience, and
provide information to assist businesses in relocating and expanding to the
City.
Councilmember questions, concerns and comments included: The
beneficial information obtained from the study that will be used to attract
the types of industries the City is interested in having within its
boundaries.
There were no public comments received on this item.
ITEM 2 FISCAL YEAR 2006-2007 BUDGET — Ken Pulskamp, City Manager,
provided highlights of the proposed operating budget and capital
improvement program with a powerpoint presentation and handouts. It is
anticipated that the public hearing and final adoption will both take place
in June 2006.
Councilmember questions, concerns and comments included: Including
enough money for graffiti abatement and support of camera use as a
deterrent; support for an aggressive Teen Court program; auctioning off
old street signs as the new ones with the City logo are placed; the need for
a strong oversight of Los Angeles County development projects; and
increasing the use of the Anti -gang Task Force.
There were no public comments received on this item.
Mayor Weste adjourned the meeting at 6:36 p.m.
