HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006-10-10 - RESOLUTIONS - MEASURE M BOND OFFERING (2)RESOLUTION NO. 06-97 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING THE COLLEGE OF THE CANYONS' EFFORTS TO FUND THE ACQUISITION AND IMPROVEMENT OF COLLEGE FACILITIES, FURNISHINGS AND EQUIPMENT THROUGH A COMMUNITY COLLEGE BOND OFFERING WHEREAS, College of the Canyons opened its Santa Clarita Valley campus in 1971 and seines more than 18,000 students per semester; and WHEREAS, the College surpassed state enrollment projections five years ahead of schedule; and WHEREAS, the College is updating its Educational and Facilities Master Plans to identify the curriculum and facilities necessary to meet the needs of its students far the next decade;and WHEREAS, 3,100 adults applied to the College, but couldn't enroll in fali 2005, and more than 2,200 more students are on the wait list for required classes each semester; and WHEREAS, the College has demonstrated its need to add, modify and modernize facilities on its Santa Clarita campus; and WHEREAS, the College has been both innovative and collaborative in obtaining funding for the development and operations of its facilities for 30 years; and WHEREAS, the College has partnered with the City of Santa Clarita, Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Providence Holy Cross Hospital, local school districts, the local business community, and other local organizations to provide educational opportunities throughout the Santa Clarita Valley; and WHEREAS, the College is amongst the Santa Clarita Valley's largest employers and makes significant contributions to the economic development of the Valley; and WHEREAS; the Board of Trustees of the Santa Clarita Community College District voted on and approved a resolution supporting a Community College Bond Campaign for the purposes of raising money for the acquisition and improvement of College facilities, furnishings, and equipment. NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Santa Clarita supports the recommended action of the Board of Trustees of the Santa Clarita Community College District which would provide for additional funds for the community college via a local bond offering; and SECTION 1. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARTTA supports the College and its efforts to pass the local bond which will appear on the November 2006 ballot, Measure M. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution. PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED this 10th day of October, 2006.
