AGENDA REPORT
City Manager Approval: AAO
CONSENT CALENDAR Item to be presented by: Christopher Price
DATE: May 22, 2007
SUBJECT: NOMINATION AND APPOINTMENT OF NEWHALL
REDEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEMBER(S)
DEPARTMENT: Community Development
RECOMMENDED ACTION
Redevelopment Agency direct the Economic Development/Redevelopment Subcommittee to
recommend appointments to serve on the Newhall Redevelopment Committee (NRC).
BACKGROUND
On February 8, 2005, the Redevelopment Agency voted to establish the number of NRC
members at 13. The Committee Norms were also established such that every two years the
Redevelopment Agency would re-evaluate one half of the then current NRC, and at the same
time open the process for new member consideration. A lottery was also held to establish which
NRC members' terms would expire in 2007, and which would carry forward to 2009.
NRC members Amparo Cevallos, Duane Harte, Carol Rock, Robert Spierer, Randal Winter, and
Leon Worden had terms that expired in January 2007. Additionally, Committee members
Melissa Pillmear resigned in September of 2006 and John Ahrens resigned in January of 2007.
On April 3, 2007, the City Clerk's Office posted notice of applications for the NRC with a
deadline for applications of May 1. The application deadline was later extended to May 14 and
15 applications were submitted for consideration.
Five of the six NRC members submitted their names for re -appointment to the Committee. In
addition, in the open process for new member consideration, 10 new applications for
appointment were received.
9til0111-lVE
New applicants for the NRC submitted the standard application form with three letters of
recommendation. The criteria for appointment is based on information in this application which
includes the applicant's involvement in the community and their vision for the project area.
The appointment of NRC Members in 2005 had the Redevelopment Agency direct the Economic
Development/Redevelopment Subcommittee to recommend a slate of candidates. Staff
recommends following the same process for this recruitment.
In anticipation of that direction, an Economic Development/Redevelopment Subcommittee
meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, May 24.
