AWARD CONTRACTS FOR PUBLIC ART AT BUS STOPS - BUS
STOP AMENITY ART PROJECT #TR -06-07-51
Administrative Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council approve to award agreements for public art for bus stop amenities, and authorize the
City Manager or designee to execute the agreements and any subsequent renewals, or modify the
agreement in the event that issues of impossibility of performance arise, subject to City Attorney
approval. Appropriate $108,000 to account #12400.5201.003, and increase the grant revenue
account # 700.4424.009 by $86,400 (which is the 80% federal grant amount). The remaining
local match (20%) will be appropriated from the 700 Transit Fund balance.
BACKGROUND
The Bus Stop Amenity Art Project is the first of many opportunities to integrate public art into
the bus stop environment and is a part of the Bus Stop Improvement Project (BSIP). The BSIP is
in the process of improving approximately 300 of the 438 bus stops located within the City of
Santa Clarita. The commissioned artists will fabricate creative works of art that also function as
bus stop shading, seating, and trash receptacles for selected bus stop locations. The creative
pieces of art will be enjoyed by pedestrians, transit users, and automobile drivers, as well as
improve the overall streetscape.
The Purchasing Division, in partnership with the Transit Division, issued a Request for Proposal
(RFP) for the Bus Stop Amenity Art Project. Notice of the RFP was published three times.
Additionally, 45 artists registered for the proposal request on the City website. Eight projects
were submitted for consideration. The successful proposals were from Los Angeles, Spokane,
Las Vegas, and Chaparral, New Mexico.

Transit staff met with the Arts Advisory Council (AAC), who recommended the City move
forward with the attached seven projects. The AAC also recommended that staff make contact
with the Art Departments of College of the Canyons, Hart School District, and California
Institute of the Arts for other possible projects. Any future projects will be submitted to the
AAC and the Council for approval.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
Other action as determined by the City Council.
