BACKGROUND The Santa Clarita Community Court Diversion Program, which targets first-time, non-violent juvenile offenders, ensures that youth who commit petty crimes in Santa Clarita pay restitution and serve their community service locally. The program, which began in October 2006, is a partnership between the City, the Sheriffs Department, the Probation Department, and the William S. Hart Union High School District. Community Court is held the first and third Wednesdays of each month, at 5:00 p.m., in Council Chambers. A judge, bailiff, City staff member, and Community Court Coordinator oversee the proceedings. Juveniles who have committed crimes, such as graffiti, vandalism, speeding, petty theft, and possession of an illegal substance, are sentenced to make restitution. Currently, restitution includes: Letters of apology to victims. Community service hours. Prevention classes, such as driving school, teen choices, and anger management. In addition to the above, Court staff would like to implement new fees. All fees would be paid to the City Cashier, and deposited into the Community Court Account Number 001-6452. By Moptedd. --1 completing assigned community service and classes, paying fees, and avoiding convictions during their probationary period, juveniles would avoid a conviction on their record. Upon review and approval by City Council, fees would be implemented as stated herein. The fees will be included in the Fee Schedule and approved annually by City Council. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS Decline adoption of Community Court fees. Other action as determined by the City Council. FISCAL IMPACT If implemented, increased revenue.
