INTRODUCTION OF ORDINANCE CONCERNING
COUNCILMEMBER COMPENSATION

RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council introduce and pass to second reading an ordinance entitled "AN ORDINANCE OF
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA, AMENDING
SECTION 2.04.048 OF THE SANTA CLARITA MUNICIPAL CODE REGARDING CITY
COUNCIL SALARIES."
BACKGROUND
Members of the Santa Clarita City Council, are compensated monthly by the City, under specific
provisions of state law, for the substantial amount of time and effort they contribute leading our
local government. In addition to participating in regular meetings of the City Council,. Members
of the City Council represent the City on regional and statewide boards, commissions and
organizations, participate in a wide variety of community events, and often meet with
constituents on issues of concern to residents of Santa Clarita. The last City Council
compensation adjustment took place on July 1, 2006.
Government Code Section 36516(c) sets forth basic provisions which allow regular adjustments
to the City Council compensation. Government Code Section 36516.5 requires that City Council
compensation adjustments be adopted by the present City Council, to be effective for future City
Councils. This proposed adjustment presents a reasonable manner in which to assure the fair and
equitable compensation of Councilmembers of future City Councils. Section 36516(c) provides
for Councilmember compensation to be increased by 5% for each calendar year from the
operative date of the last adjustment to salary. The last salary adjustment was on July '1, 2006.

Second reading
The recommended increase'represents a 5% increase for the period July 1, 2006 through June 30,
2007 and an additional 5% increase for the period July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008, to be
effective July 1, 2008.
The proposed monthly adjustment, as set forth by the Government Code Section 36516(c), is as
follows:

FISCAL IMPACT
Proposed Compensation
$1,571.67
The proposed increase of $146.12 per month per Councilmember represents an approximate
annual increase of $10,349 in salary and salary based benefits and taxes. In the current fiscal year
it represents no budget increase.

' CONCERNING CITY COUNCIL SALARIES
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA, DOES HEREBY
ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION I. That Section 2.04.048 is amended to read as follows:
"2.04.048 City Council Salaries
The Compensation for City Councilmembers shall be increased as provided for in
Government Code Section 36516(c) to the amount of $1,571.67 per month, effective
July 1, 2008. Such compensation shall be payable on a monthly basis and in the same manner as
salaries are paid to other officers and employees of the City of Santa Clarita."
SECTION 2. This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect on July 1, 2008.
SECTION 3. The City Clerk shall certify to the passage of this Ordinance and shall cause the
same to be published as required by law.
