BACKGROUND The City of Santa Clarita has been named as one of California's Healthy Cities; one of 100 communities in the nation that is great for kids (America's Promise); one of America's safest cities; and the top California City in which to live (CNN/Money Magazine), to name a few, recent prestigious designations. Santa Clarita regularly participates in several local and regional programs promoting a healthy lifestyle. Three years ago, the City launched its Healthy Santa Clarita program, complete with a website (www.healthysantaclarita.com) and outreach program. As a young city, Santa Clarita has worked hard to help build and support a healthy community that includes a broad spectrum of health consciousness (bodies, mind, community and spirit). While Santa Clarita has always focused on helping people achieve a healthy lifestyle, a recognition program that would highlight those local individuals, agencies and businesses in the community who also contribute to our community's healthy bodies, minds, community and spirit, has not yet been done. Many different events, programs, expos and activities occur every month in Santa Clarita, led by agencies, non -profits and individuals who make valuable contributions. By recognizing those who go a long way towards helping our residents attain a more healthful lifestyle, inclusive of I tem wa s WA d 13w (,v; l l OS k S+a4f +o Icy r ma, or McL.ecc o GLw lE 0A "7r e,- T roa r'a N--1 their bodies, mind and community, the City will highlight these efforts, empowering these entities and individuals in their efforts, and furthering our City's position as "the keeper of the good life." The proposed award program could feature three categories of recognition: • Businesses (inclusive of any business, large or small in the City) • Individuals (inclusive of any person or family) • Community (inclusive of schools, neighborhoods, PTA's and non -profits) Anyone could submit nominations for the annual Healthy Santa Clarita award by following agreed upon criteria. The City could create a custom Healthy Santa Clarita award that winners would receive. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS Other action as determined by the City Council. FISCAL IMPACT The fiscal impact of a new Healthy City Award Program would be approximately $1,000 per year for awards and advertising which would be allocated from account 1100-7320.
