2007 EDWARD BYRNE MEMORIAL JUSTICE ASSISTANCE
GRANT (JAG) PROGRAM

RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council accept 2007 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) funds
from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance.
2. Increase estimated revenues in Account Number 229-4461.008 by $35,545.
3. Increase estimated expenditures in Account Number 16104-5161.001 (Contractual Services)
by $33,586, and in Account Number 16104-5111.001 (Special Supplies) by $1,959.
Authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute any contract documents, change orders, or
amendments arising out of this program, subject to City Attorney approval.
BACKGROUND
The City of Santa Clarita has been awarded a grant for $35,545 by the U.S. Department of
Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, through the 2007 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice
Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. This program allows states and local governments to support a
broad range of activities to prevent and control crime, based on their local needs and conditions.
The funding distribution is based on population and Part 1 violent crime statistics.
Grant funds will be used for overtime that will enable the Sheriffs Station Community
Interaction Team (CIT) to conduct operations that include, but not limited to: curfew sweeps,
graffiti enforcement, truancy sweeps, bike patrols, surveillance, undercover and sting operations,
and probation/parole enforcement. Resources will also be used to address a number of the
APPRouEo
Attorney General's priorities, including gang prevention and enforcement, multi jurisdictional
task forces addressing violent crimes and drugs, and school safety.. In addition, minimal funds
will be set aside for minor equipment and supplies needed to conduct these operations. This
funding will also allow the CIT Unit to assist with other law enforcement and community
policing efforts that will help reduce crime in the City and promote safety for its residents.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
1. Decline the 2007 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Grant funding.
2. Other direction as determined by City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
The total cost of this program is $35,545 to be offset completely by grant funds.
