SUBJECT: 1-5/MAGIC MOUNTAIN PARKWAY INTERCHANGE
RECONSTRUCTION PHASE 2, PROJECT NO. S1003 - AWARD
OF CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING SUPPORT CONTRACTS

RECOMMENDED ACTION
1. City Council award construction support contracts for the reconstruction of Interstate
5/Magic Mountain Parkway Interchange, Phase 2, Project No. S 1003, to Psomas &
Associates for engineering survey services in the amount of $300,000.00 including a 10
percent contingency, and to Willdan Associates for construction engineering in the amount of
$100,000.00 including a 10 percent contingency.
2. Authorize the City Manager or designee to execute all documents subject to City Attorney
approval.
BACKGROUND
Construction of the proposed Interstate 5/Magic Mountain Parkway Interchange improvements is
currently underway with an anticipated completion of fall 2008. The current work consists of
the box culvert construction as part of The Old Road realignment and the construction of the
retaining walls for the southbound ramps at Magic Mountain Parkway. In addition, the proposed
improvements will consist of the widening of freeway ramps at Magic Mountain Parkway, a new
auxiliary lane in advance of the northbound off -ramp, widening of Magic Mountain Parkway
from The Old Road to the proposed northbound ramps, and realignment and widening of The
Old Road from approximately 550 meters south of Magic Mountain Parkway to approximately
450 meters north of Magic Mountain Parkway. Also, various utility relocation work will be
performed by affected utility companies.

Additional construction support services are needed for this project. This item is to award
engineering support services contracts to Psomas & Associates and Willdan Associates to
supplement the existing construction engineering support team (City staff and MetroPointe
Engineers) to meet the demands of construction survey staking and various design coordination
with Caltrans, Los Angeles County, and the affected utility companies.
Funds are available in the project budget for these support services. Funds will be reimbursed by
grant and developer sources.

Other action as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
Sufficient funds are available in the project account for these additional requests.
