SUBJECT: AUTHORIZATION TO DONATE SOME SURPLUS STREET
SIGNS TO LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND NON-PROFIT
ORGANIZATIONS FOR FUND-RAISING

RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council authorize the City Manager or designee to donate some surplus City street signs to
local school districts and/or non-profit organizations for fund-raising.
BACKGROUND
On June 6, 2004, the City Council adopted changes to Title III of the Santa Clarita Municipal
Code. Specifically, Section 3.12.330 requires that the City Council authorize any donation of
surplus equipment valued at more than $1,000.
Last year, the City began replacing existing green street signs at major intersections with new
reflective blue street signs sporting the City seal. The old street signs will be disassembled. The
"blade" portion with the actual street names on them can be utilized in a variety of ways, and the
portion with the light box will be sold for scrap. The City has approximately 200 signs. The
City has already received a few requests for the street signs.
By creating a lawful process, the City would like to offer locally based, non-profit agencies the
opportunity to receive the signs as available. These could be used in the agencies fund-raising
efforts. There would be no cost to the non-profit agency.

The City of Santa Clarita is currently replacing its street signs at major City intersections. In an
effort to best use the,old signs, the City will be donating some of them to local non-profit
organizations for their fundraising needs.
If you represent a Santa Clarita Valley based non-profit (501 C3) organization and would like to
receive City street signs for the purposes of fundraising (auctions, sales, etc.) for your
organization, please complete this form.
The street sign giveaway program will be "first come, first served," based upon qualifications.
You will be notified regarding what signs your organization will be given and when you can pick
them up at the City's Public Works yard.

names). Please be prepared to load and transport your sign(s).
• Your organization will need to provide a follow up thank you letter to the City, complete
with information about what your organization will be doing with the sign(s).
• There is no charge for the city street signs!
