ASSISTANCE (JAG) GRANT PROGRAM

RECOMMENDED ACTION
1. City Council to accept Fiscal Year 2008 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant
(JAG) funds from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance.
2. Increase estimated revenues in Account 206-4461.009 by $12,805.
3. Increase estimated expenditures in Account 16109-5161.001 (Contractual Services) by
$12,158, and in Account 16109-5191.001 (Travel and Training) by $647.
4. Authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute any contract documents, change orders, or
amendments arising out of this program, subject to City Attorney approval.
BACKGROUND
The City of Santa Clarita has been awarded a grant in the amount of $12,805 by the U.S.
Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance through the Fiscal Year 2008 Edward Byrne
Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. This program allows states and local
governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their
local needs and conditions. The funding distribution is based on population and Part 1 violent
crime statistics.
Grant funds will be used for overtime to enable the Sheriff Station's Community Interaction
Team (CIT) and COBRA Unit to conduct operations such as: gang suppression, curfew sweeps,

graffiti enforcement, truancy sweeps, bike patrols, surveillance, undercover and sting operations,
and probation/parole enforcement. In addition, minimal funds will be used for travel and
training.
This funding will also allow the CIT and COBRA Units to assist with other law enforcement and
community policing efforts that will help reduce crime in the City and promote safety for Santa
Clarita residents.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
1. Decline the Fiscal Year 2008 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant funding.
2. Other direction as determined by City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
Increase grant revenue account 206-4461.009 by $12,805. Increase expenditure account
16109-5161.001 by $12,158 and 16109-5191.001 by $647.
