BACKGROUND In 2002, the California Energy Commission adopted standards for vehicular traffic signal lamps and modules; adding standards for pedestrian lamps in 2004. State mandate now requires that traffic signals statewide use energy-efficient LED technology. Currently, 86 of the City's signalized intersections feature LED technology. This is the third phase of a five-year program to replace incandescent traffic signal lamps with energy-efficient LED modules and install pedestrian countdown modules at 30 intersections out of 172 existing signalized intersections. APPR ED The existing incandescent traffic signal lamps within the City utilize 150 watts per lamp, while the energy-efficient LED modules use only 10 watts per lamp. This 93 percent reduction in energy consumption will save the City approximately $30,000.00 annually in utility costs. Southern California Edison is also offering a rebate incentive of $16,000.00. This amount in addition to the energy savings will recover the project installation costs within four years. The incentive money will be used to implement Phase IV, which will be partially funded through a - CIP budget request for Fiscal Year 2009-10.
