SUBJECT: REQUEST TO RETURN HISTORICAL BELL TO THE SAUGUS
UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT
DEPARTMENT: City Manager's Office
COMMENDED ACTION
City Council submit a letter to the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society requesting that the
historical bell be returned to the Saugus Union School District and provide direction on how to
pay for the removal and replacement.
BACKGROUND
The first Saugus Elementary School opened in 1908 with a bronze bell placed in the school
tower. When the Saugus Elementary School closed in 1978, the Saugus Union School District
voted to donate the bell to the Santa Clarita Valley Historical Society so the bell could still be
viewed and appreciated by many. However, in 2000 the bell was placed on permanent loan with
the City of Santa Clarita at the Jan Heidt Metrolink Station in Newhall.
Currently, the Saugus Union School District is requesting that the bell be returned to them. The
Saugus Union School District would like to work in conjunction with the Santa Clarita Valley
Historical Society, and the City to determine how their request can be accommodated and
possibly replacing the bell at the Jan Heidt Metrolink Station with a similar bell from the same
time period.
