RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF USING
REUSABLE BAGS
Public Works
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council adopt a resolution recognizing the City's past, present, and future efforts to promote
reusable bags and limit our dependence on plastic shopping bags, including the support of the
Los Angeles County "Day Without a Bag" program and any future programs.
BACKGROUND
U.S. consumers use 100 billion plastic bags annually. Residents of the City of Santa Clarita
alone use and dispose of approximately 2,600 tons of plastic bags each year. Many of the plastic
bags that are not sent to the landfill or recycled end up polluting the City's roadways, storm
drains, and riparian environment.
The City's ongoing programs to address the blight associated with litter, including plastic bags,
include the following:
• Annual River Rally Cleanup Event
• Continued advertising of the Bag -Your -Bag Program with the commercial and residential
haulers' quarterly newsletters
• Street Litter Abatement Program
• Distribution of reusable bags at City events, including River Rally in 2005 and Arbor Day in
2002. The bags distributed were made from recycled plastic bottles.
• Press release in support of the Los Angeles County "Day Without a Bag" Program
• Pride Week Community Cleanup Event -j
Adopted: Felo, OR-//
In addition to continuing the above mentioned programs, staff will continue to seek more
opportunities to create and participate in new programs, including working with Los Angeles
County staff to participate in future events promoting reusable, bags and researching funding
opportunities in the form of grants to cover the costs associated with promotion opportunities.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
Other action as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
