NO -STOPPING ANYTIME ZONE ALONG THE EASTSIDE OF
SIERRA HIGHWAY, NORTH OF NEWHALL AVENUE (SAN

RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council adopt a resolution establishing approximately 500 feet of no -stopping anytime zone
along the eastside of Sierra Highway, north of Newhall Avenue (San Fernando Road):
BACKGROUND
To accommodate the peak -hour traffic volumes and help alleviate traffic congestion at the
intersection of Sierra Highway and Newhall Avenue (Exhibit "A"), staff is proposing to install a
second northbound left -turn lane. To make room for the additional left -turn lane, existing
northbound through lanes will shift easterly. Shifting the lanes easterly will require the
establishment of a no -stopping zone along the eastside of Sierra Highway, extending
approximately 500 feet north of Newhall Avenue.
A Carl's Jr. Restaurant is located on the northeast corner of the intersection. It has adequate
parking within its property to accommodate customers. Staff contacted the General Manager of
the Carl's Jr. Restaurant who had no objection to the elimination of parking in front of the
business. Therefore, the no -stopping zone along the eastside of the road will have no adverse
affect on parking demands in the area.

This project involves the installation of 5 or 6 signs amounting to approximately $1,000. Funds
for this project are available in the Streets Striping and Signing maintenance Account
14504-5111.010.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SANTA CLARITA, CALIFORNIA, TO ESTABLISH A NO -STOPPING ANYTIME
ZONE APPROXIMATELY (500 FEET TOTAL) ALONG THE EASTSIDE OF SIERRA
HIGHWAY, NORTH OF NEWHALL AVENUE (SAN FERNANDO ROAD)
WHEREAS, Section 22507 of the California Vehicle Code of the State of California
provides for local authorities to prohibit stopping, standing, or parking of vehicles on certain
streets or highways or portions thereof during certain or all hours of the day; and
WHEREAS, A request was made to establish a no -stopping zone along the eastside
of Sierra Highway, north of Newhall Avenue to accommodate an additional northbound lane; and
WHEREAS, It is consistent with normal traffic engineering practices to establish a
no -stopping anytime zone along the eastside of Sierra Highway, north of Newhall Avenue.
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Santa Clarita does hereby
resolve as follows:
SECTION 1. That a no -stopping anytime zone along the eastside of Sierra Highway
extending approximately 500 feet north of Newhall Avenue is established.
SECTION 2. That establishing the no -stopping anytime zone shall apply when
appropriate signs and/or curb markings giving adequate notice thereof have been placed as
described in Section 1.
SECTION 3.That staff shall install the necessary signs and/or curb markings to effect
this resolution.
SECTION 4. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution.
