APPROVAL AND AUTHORIZATION FOR THE SALE OF
SURPLUS FAREBOX EQUIPMENT TO THE ANTELOPE
VALLEY TRANSIT AUTHORITY (AVTA)
Administrative Services
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council authorize the City Manager or designee to sell surplus farebox equipment to the
Antelope Valley Transit Authority (AVTA) for $4,999.
BACKGROUND
In July 2007, the City installed new smart card -enabled GFI Odyssey validating fareboxes on its
transit fleet as part of the region -wide Universal Fare System (UFS/TAP). As a result, the
existing cash/coin-only GFI Cents -a -Bill registering fareboxes were removed. All spare parts
from the Cents -a -Bill fareboxes that could be used to maintain the City's new farebox system
have been retained on site by maintenance staff.
The Antelope Valley Transit Authority (AVTA) recently contacted the City and requested to
purchase the City's lot of fareboxes, including a vault, for $4,999. AVTA is in dire need of
additional fareboxes to complete their fleet installation, as well as spare parts to maintain their
fare collection system. Based on similar situations in the past, staff believes the offer to
represent a reasonable value for the equipment. With the approval of the City's Purchasing
Agent, staff is recommending the sale of surplus fareboxes to AVTA for $4,999. By selling the
equipment to AVTA, it remains in the custody of a public transit agency who is a participant in
the region -wide UFS/TAP fare system, which is in the best interest of the public and the region.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
1. Direct staff to conduct another auction.
2. Other action as determined by the City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
Funds secured by the sale will be allotted to Revenue Account 700.4621.001.
