BACKGROUND During the last week of October 2007, Public Works activities were centered on emergency response to wind storms and the Buckweed Fire. Periods of high winds required .the Urban Forestry Division to spend a significant amount of time clearing fallen limbs and trees in the City's right-of-way. To facilitate emergency evacuations as a result of the fire, the need to immediately clear the right-of-way was critical. Due to the urgent need to clear trees, the services of the City's tree trimming contractor were required. With the assistance of the contractor in clearing the right-of-way, evacuations were orderly and not hampered by debris in the path of emergency vehicles. The Urban Forestry Division incurred $79,700 in contract costs as part of its disaster response, an expense not anticipated within the existing Urban Forestry budget. This request is for a one-time increase. The contract will return to its original annual base contract amount of $550,000 at the end of this fiscal year. OF ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS Other action as determined by the City Council.
