HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-02-24 - AGENDA REPORTS - APPT SC REPRESENTATIVE VECTOR (2)Agenda Item: CITY OF SANTA CLARITA AGENDA REPORT CONSENT CALENDAR City Manager Approval: Item to be presented by: DATE: February 24, 2009 SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT OF CITY OF SANTA CLARITA REPRESENTATIVE TO THE GREATER LOS ANGELES VECTOR CONTROL DISTRICT DEPARTMENT: Public Works RECOMMENDED ACTION City Council appoint Robert Newman, Director of Public Works, to the Greater Los Angeles Vector Control District Board to represent the City of Santa Clarita for a two-year term. BACKGROUND The Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District is a non -enterprise, independent special district, which acts as a public health agency as a result 'of legislation incorporated in the California State Health and Safety Code. The District's objective is to protect the health of the public in the 34 cities and areas of Los Angeles County. To properly represent all areas of Los Angeles County, the Board of Trustees is comprised of members from each individual city within the county. Many trustees are mayors and councilmembers as well as residents who have a true interest to serve and protect public health. A large number of the trustees are elected officials, although that is not a requirement. Former Councilmember Jan Heidt represented the City of Santa Clarita from 1990 to January 5, 2009. As a result of her resignation, the seat is vacant. The minimum qualifications for the position require the person to be appointed by the City Council, to be a resident voter of the representative city within the vector control district, and serve a minimum two-year term or a maximum four-year term. The board member's duties and responsibilities include setting policy, establishing the budget, approving expenditures, and retaining legal counsel. The regularly scheduled board meetings are held on the second Thursday APPROWED of each month starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District headquarters in Santa Fe Springs. The City Council may consider appointing a new trustee for either a two-year or a four-year term. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS Other action as determined by the City Council.
