Public Works
RECOMMENDED ACTION
City Council direct staff to submit grant applications to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan
Transportation Authority (Metro) by the April 24, 2009, deadline requesting an estimated
$54,593,000 in the 2009 Metro Call for Projects grant cycle.
BACKGROUND
In January 2009, the Metro Board approved to initiate the 2009 Call for Projects (Call) process.
The Call is a competitive grant process typically held biennially that cofunds new regionally
significant capital transportation projects. The 2009 Call will be highly competitive, with up to
88 cities and the County of Los Angeles seeking available funding, beginning in Fiscal Year
2011 through 2015.
The 2009 Call schedule is as follows:
• April 24, 2009 - Applications due to Metro
• May/June 2009 - Applications ranked by Metro staff
• July 2009 - Funding recommendations released
• September 2009 - Metro Board adopts Call recommendations
The Public Works Traffic and Transportation Planning Division took the lead in coordinating the
City's grant applications effort. Staff from all departments met to discuss projects that would be
good candidates for this funding opportunity. Projects were selected based on need, project
readiness, grant requirement fit, and budget, among other considerations. Should any project not
receive grant funding, staff will place the project on the City's unfunded list for future
consideration.
