BACKGROUND
The City received the State of California Traffic Light Synchronization Program (TLSP) grant in
the amount of $500,000. The TLSP is part of Proposition 1 B approved on November 7, 2006.
This program funded traffic light synchronization projects and other technology-based
improvements to increase safety and operations of local streets and roads. The grant expanded
the City's existing Intelligent Transportation System by installing 17 additional system detection
systems along Bouquet Canyon Road, Railroad Avenue, Newhall Avenue, and Sierra Highway to
collect data for the City's Advance Traveler Information System (ATIS). The ATIS will allow
travelers to make more informed choices about their routes by giving travelers real time.
information of incidents and areas of congestion. The ATIS will allow travelers to choose their
travel routes and reduce travel times to make trips more predictable and reliable. The ATIS is a
web -based system that provides route specific alerts via text message and email on congestion,
construction, and major incidents. As one of the Mayor's Top 10 Goals for 21010, staff expects the
the City's ATIS system to be fully operational by the end of September 2010.
On October 13, 2009, the City Council awarded the construction contract to Steiny and
Company, Inc., in the amount of $393,890. This project was completed within budget to the
satisfaction of the City Engineer on May 3, 2010.
