BACKGROUND On March 16, 2010, the community learned of the sudden passing of Ed Redd, a member of the City's Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commission. He had served on the Commission for 7-1/2 years, and was a fonner Commission Chair. Ed was very dedicated to the community, was an advocate for youth in Santa Clarita and was especially concerned about the welfare of at -risk teens, and he counseled teens and families. Ed was instrumental in starting several youth initiatives in Santa Clarita. At the May 6, 2010, Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Commission meeting, the Commission discussed several ways to appropriately honor and remember the late Ed Redd, and recommended that staff bring the following three ideas to the City Council for approval: 1. Place an inscription on a framed photograph of Ed Redd to hang in the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department Office. 2. Establish a scholarship program in Ed Redd's name at the Newhall Community Center, which would provide opportunities for low-income youth to participate in Community Center programs. 3. Name the Teen Room at the Newhall Community Center the "Ed Redd Teen Room." The City has standards for naming City facilities after individuals who have made significant public service contributions to the community. Staff feels that the above suggestions will commemorate the City's appreciation of the late Commissioner Ed Redd and recognize his commitment and dedication to the community. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS Other action as determined by City Council. FISCAL IMPACT Funds are available within existing budgets to pay for the suggestions that staff is presenting to the City Council. 0
