City Council accept Fiscal Year 2010 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) funds from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance. 2. Increase estimated revenues in account 206-4461.011 by $42,879. 3. Increase estimated expenditures in account 16112-5161.001 by $41,050, and in account 16112-5191.001 by $1,829. 4. Authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute any contract documents, change orders, or amendments arising out of this program, subject to City Attorney approval. BACKGROUND The City of Santa Clarita has been awarded a grant for $42,879 by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, through the Fiscal Year 2010 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. This program allows states and local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime, based on their local needs and conditions. The funding distribution is based on population and Part 1 violent crime statistics. Grant funds will be used for overtime that will enable the Sheriff Station's Community Interaction Team (CIT) and COBRA Units to conduct operations that include, but are not limited to, gang suppression, curfew sweeps, graffiti enforcement, truancy sweeps, bike patrols, alcohol and tobacco stings, probation/parole enforcement, and other surveillance, undercover, and sting operations, as needed. In addition, minimal funds will be set aside for travel and training. This funding will allow the CIT and COBRA Units to assist with other law enforcement and community policing efforts that will help reduce crime in the City and promote safety for Santa Clarita residents. ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS 1. Decline the Fiscal Year 2010 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant funding. 2. Other direction as determined by City Council. FISCAL IMPACT The total cost of this program is $42,879, to be offset completely by grant funds.
