BACKGROUND
The City of Santa Clarita has been awarded a grant for $42,879 by the U.S. Department of
Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, through the Fiscal Year 2010 Edward Byrne Memorial
Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program. This program allows states and local governments to
support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime, based on their local needs and
conditions. The funding distribution is based on population and Part 1 violent crime statistics.
Grant funds will be used for overtime that will enable the Sheriff Station's Community
Interaction Team (CIT) and COBRA Units to conduct operations that include, but are not limited
to, gang suppression, curfew sweeps, graffiti enforcement, truancy sweeps, bike patrols, alcohol
and tobacco stings, probation/parole enforcement, and other surveillance, undercover, and sting
operations, as needed. In addition, minimal funds will be set aside for travel and training.
This funding will allow the CIT and COBRA Units to assist with other law enforcement and
community policing efforts that will help reduce crime in the City and promote safety for Santa
Clarita residents.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIONS
1. Decline the Fiscal Year 2010 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant funding.
2. Other direction as determined by City Council.
FISCAL IMPACT
The total cost of this program is $42,879, to be offset completely by grant funds.
